چکیده

As powder bed based additive manufacturing (AM) is gaining more traction in the research and industry, significant efforts are made to expand capability of AM combining different materials. Conventionally, multiple materials, sealants processes necessary order join metal glasses assemblies. The development a single-step process for vacuum-tight strong bonding between glass could drastically reduce part count assembly cost. This paper investigates feasibility joining iron-nickel-cobalt alloy Kovar with borosilicate glass. fusion by laser beam used melt structures directly onto substrates. Suitable parameter an iron-silicon-oxide material-bonding layer 3 µm thickness were developed using design experiments. With energy input 333 J/mm³ initial 60 bulk structure, tensile testing metal-glass-connection revealed forces up 0.5 MPa.

Contact-Free Support Structures for Part Overhangs in Powder-Bed Metal Additive Manufacturing

This study investigates the feasibility of a novel concept, contact-free support structures, for part overhangs in powder-bed metal additive manufacturing. The intent is to develop alternative support designs that require no or little post-processing, and yet, maintain effective in minimizing overhang distortions. The idea is to build, simultaneously during part fabrications, a heat sink (calle...

Residual Stress in Metal Parts Produced by Powder-Bed Additive Manufacturing Processes

In this study, residual stresses from the electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM) and selective laser melting (SLM) processes, due to repeated thermal cycles, were investigated. Residual stresses play a crucial role in part performance, and thus, it is critical to evaluate the process-induced residual stresses in AM parts. Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718 parts produced by EBAM and SLM, respective...

Numerical Investigations on Hatching Process Strategies for Powder Bed Based Additive Manufacturing using an Electron Beam

This paper extends 3D simulation results of layer hatching process strategies for additive manufacturing by electron beam melting (EBM) applications to exploit the future energy potential of electron guns with higher beam power. The physical model, discretized by a three dimensional thermal lattice Boltzmann method, is briefly presented. The numerical implementation is validated on the basis of...

Consolidation phenomena in laser and powder-bed based layered manufacturing

Layered manufacturing (LM) is gaining ground for manufacturing prototypes (RP), tools (RT) and functional end products (RM). Laser and powder bed based manufacturing (i.e. selective laser sintering/melting or its variants) holds a special place within the variety of LM processes: no other LM techniques allow processing polymers, metals, ceramics as well as many types of composites. To do so, ho...

Mesoscopic Simulation of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in Laser Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing

Laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing involves complex physics such as heat transfer and molten metal flow, which have a significant influence on the final build quality. In this study, transport phenomena based modeling is used to provide a quantitative understanding of complex molten pool transients. In particular, a three dimensional (3D), transient numerical model is develo...
